Manager in the digital age, training and implementation

Managing in the digital age is driving profound changes in companies. Thus, the posture of managers evolves towards new modes of operation, more in line with the new organization of work.

Towards collaborative management

Thus, traditional management is gradually disappearing in favor of a more collaborative, human, value-creating management. However, the digital transformation of companies implies a real change of approach, not a simple transposition of habits to digital.

In a few years and even more with the health crisis and the lockdowns, the shortcomings and difficulties of remote management are particularly felt. They also contribute to widening the gap in performance and competitiveness between companies that are resistant to change and those built on flexibility. In this context, training managers in remote management is proving to be a major challenge for the coming months.

Remote management, between managers’ soft-skills and corporate culture

The ease or not of managing remotely depends on the human skills of managers; and on the other hand, the corporate culture. If, on the second part, the changes must be carried out gradually and with tact, the first, it depends on the ability of the management to question itself, to train itself and to surround itself with complementary profiles.

Moreover, experience confirms that even an evolution of management methods must be part of a continuity to avoid disruption. Also, it is easier for companies already familiar with digital to support their employees towards the adoption of these changes.

Before managing from home, a period of training is necessary.

Tools already in place in organizations; Ability of the hierarchy to explain ongoing changes. propose processes in line with the trades… On the recruitment side, HR also values profiles with a digital culture, better able to take charge of the transition. For the teams already in place, many companies are now turning to training in digital tools, the challenges of digital transformation and remote management.

In this context, remote management involves managers developing their soft skills. More than ever, they must demonstrate their ability to drive change and therefore show flexibility and responsiveness. More than managers, we hear managers of the digital age to know how to communicate on strategy, involve employees, give meaning to work. In short, cultivate trust and a sense of belonging.

They are more than ever essential links to retain talent, develop the skills of the team, value collaborative work through design thinking methods in particular.

Digitalization, also a challenge for distance management education

Inevitably, in this context, training for managers has its place. Moreover, in the digital age, distance learning is also multiplying. Professionals are looking for schools and training centers capable of teaching via digital technology. From now on, it is therefore a whole ecosystem to be formed, a whole mode of operation to be reinvented, both for companies and for trainers.

Thus, the National Foundation for Business Management Education (FNEGE) has set itself the mission of supporting higher education professors in management in a digital environment. With the health crisis, the use of digital technology in higher education has accelerated, without anticipating the constraints and therefore according to the means of each institution and teacher.

While on the one hand, the tools exist and are generally recognized as adequate, it is regularly the human who asks questions. Teachers wonder in particular about the loss of social ties; organizational difficulties; the change of pedagogical approach; the articulation and equivalence between the different tools or modes of course… In the light of these elements, the FNEGE is currently working on a series of recommendations. It plans to share a plan soon to support higher education institutions in management in their digital transformation.
