Geev, promoting re-employment through donation

Geev has just spent the 10 million donations on his platform. The application, launched in 2017, has enjoyed unprecedented success in Bordeaux, the city of origin… But also throughout the country. In particular, it advocates the re-use of objects that users no longer use, thanks to donation. But donations are not limited only to objects on Geev. Households can also provide food for families in need. Actions that put human exchange back at the heart of a resolutely solidarity approach… And eco-responsible.

Geev, a solidarity application that makes the difference

With more than 3 million users to date, Geev has established itself in the market of re-use and solidarity through donation. The creation of this application that has become essential today comes from a simple observation. The absence of real companies, initiatives or solidarity solutions. Until then, when a family wanted to get rid of an object, a piece of furniture, it threw it to bulky items, or sold it when possible. By throwing an object, it becomes a waste, with an immediate consequence: pollution.

Because when a household disposes of an object to buy a new one, it impacts its environment. For it is necessary to produce in order to create, and destroy, that which is no longer of use. But is this a sign that the object could not have been used any longer? Geev wants to be able to give a second life to all these objects left behind by their owners. The application is intuitive: the “geever” posts an ad where he offers as a gift his object, or his food. The potential buyer can then pick up the products by hand, and give them a new life.

Also, the “Geever” are very receptive to the concept and offer their objects as a gift. This is directly reflected in the evolution of the company’s statistics: +99% of donations in 2020 compared to 2019. This significant increase can be explained in particular by the current health context. With successive lockdowns, and the desire for change, households are sorting out their belongings and getting rid of what they no longer use. A change for the benefit of families who have needs, but not necessarily the means to afford the new product.

At the same time, the number of users has seen such a significant increase of around 29%. This represents an average of 20,000 new users per week.

Limiting waste, and promoting re-use: a necessity.

Solidarity and anti-waste, a head-on fight for companies

Geev’s message was therefore a success of his journey, and seduced Bordeaux households, but not only. Indeed, the concept has been very well exported abroad as well as in Canada, Belgium, Great Britain and Switzerland. Countries that are also sensitive to anti-waste and reuse as much as possible. A more economical alternative for households, but also for the planet. Consuming more responsibly is part of the new challenges of companies and countries… Issues to which households are also more sensitive.

Thus, the 10 million donations made since the creation of Geev have made it possible to avoid the production of more than 20,000 tons of waste. This makes it possible to extend the life of objects, and to allow families in need to enjoy them. But Geev’s offer is also about food. Thanks to the application, more than 150,000 tons of food have escaped the trash, while they were still edible. A big step to limit food waste.

In France, many initiatives are emerging to limit food waste, especially in companies. Too Good To Go, for example, offers retailers, bakeries and restaurant brands the right to offer their unsold goods at lower prices at the end of their service. This allows consumers to pick up the products before they go to the trash, and the brand to sell its products, even at a lower price.

Other initiatives, such as solidarity refrigerators, make it possible to provide homeless people or people from modest households with access to fresh produce free of charge. In Bordeaux, the project of “solidarity fridges” would be to have at least one fridge in each district of the city.
