DESKi and the Bordeaux University Hospital: a future-oriented partnership

DESKi a start-up at the service of health. In the digital age and with the rise of artificial intelligence, the progress of society is progressing a little more every day. Thus, it is constantly changing and we see the appearance of new solutions to improve the daily life of each sector. Indeed, new technologies are taking over a market in demand. In particular, they are increasingly marked by new solutions. Today, these innovative ideas and the inventions of tomorrow intervene in all fields. Medicine is the first interesting sector on this subject. Despite the real problems facing this sector, medicine is part of our future. It is to make it evolve while using new technologies that the start-up DESKi was created.

DESKi, a start-up dedicated to medicine

The start-up DESKi, meaning “learning” in the Breton language, was created in 2016. It was born from Bertrand MOAL’s desire to improve the solutions and possibilities offered by medicine. In our society, it will be said that the medical sector can be damaged. Indeed, the sector suffers from a phenomenon of medical desert. The objective of DESKi is to enable the development of medical image analysis tools. The solution relies on the know-how of specialists dedicated to a large medical community. To achieve this goal, the start-up combines medical expertise and artificial intelligence algorithms.

In this sense DESKi collaborates with health professionals. It focuses on research into automation, accuracy and data management. The goal is to ensure experience and assurance for the medical world. A real step forward, which makes it possible to advance medicine day after day.

The project of the start-up DESKi is supported from the beginning of its creation by the unitec incubator (Pessac). The structure of aid for the development of start-ups in the Bordeaux territory. Thus, DESKi relies on medicine performed by ultrasound. For entrepreneurs, betting on this medical means is therefore not a decision taken lightly. Indeed, behind the use of ultrasound it has real advantages. First the ultrasound is non-invasive, then it is multi-organ and finally it is affordable. In 2019, it is a way to respond to the various challenges of public health.

The use of medical imaging is increasing within society for reasons of practicality and reliability. However, if it is constantly evolving, it is always more difficult to access despite the need of patients for their follow-up. At the same time, we must not forget that experience is necessary to master the equipment. This is one of the reasons that pushed DESKi to develop new solutions. Thus, the start-up has highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence. The goal is to make the use of medical imaging more accessible and simple.

However, the Bordeaux start-up does not stop there in the achievement of its objectives, and especially its projects.

Ultrasound at the centre of concerns

The start-up DESKi is indeed looking to advance medicine. In its strategy, it puts at the heart of its concerns the means used to improve public health. With this in mind, it has signed a Contract at Bordeaux University Hospital. It is the first hospital complex in the Bordeaux conurbation as well as in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This collaboration aims to establish, strengthen and develop research in the field of artificial intelligence. This research is accompanied by the desire to democratize ultrasound. So that this can take place in the best possible conditions so that success is at the rendezvous, DESKi has installed a high-performance computing server. It will help artificial intelligence within the Bordeaux medical institution.

This server will allow data to be analyzed anonymously. This dimension aims in particular to comply with the regulations of the Commission Nationale Informatique et Libertés. This is, for the start-up based in the center of Bordeaux, an opportunity that will allow it to collect quality data. It will thus be able to improve its solutions under development. DESKi therefore acts with the desire to evolve and create optimal solutions, to ensure the result and safety.

DESKi wants to improve the healthcare sector through innovation

This partnership is a real asset for the young start-up. On the other hand, it is also a chance for the Bordeaux University Hospital to show its evolution. The university hospital, located in Place Amélie Raba Léon in Bordeaux, then looks to the future by signing this partnership. By deciding to use artificial intelligence, the CHU is betting on medical progress and offers the possibility of solving the problems encountered by the sector. Among the problems at the heart of the sector is the fact that medical education is expensive. In addition, as mentioned above, the medical desert is becoming increasingly important within the establishment. All these advances will allow patients to be better monitored. At the same time, professionals will be better trained.

Each year, Bordeaux University Hospital performs more than 17,000 cardiac ultrasound examinations. Of course, it relies on ever more precise and sophisticated equipment. Health is a key issue in society. Thus, its importance is constantly at the heart of concerns. However, there are inequalities. Indeed, a large part of the population does not have equal access to medical services. DESKi wants to reduce these inequalities. In addition, it wants to improve existing solutions. To focus on artificial intelligence is to look to tomorrow. While e-health is already the key interest of many companies, this is the moment when ever for DESKi to continue to develop tools for people’s health. The goal is to provide equal access to care for all across the country.

With this partnership, the Bordeaux start-up is working with the cardiology department of the University Hospital of Bordeaux. By combining the use of ultrasound with that of artificial intelligence, DESKi is taking a real step forward for medicine. In addition to working at the heart of this medical service, Bertrand MOAL and his team then want to extend their expertise to specialize in other sectors. Among the planned sectors, there are mainly gynecology, gastroenterology as well as urology.
