Bordeaux: moving to green energy

Bordeaux has set itself ambitious energy targets for 2050 in favour of green energy. For good reason, the Gironde capital aims for perfect energy autonomy and even plans to achieve 100% renewable energy production. For the moment, if the dream still seems far away, Nouvelle-Aquitaine has nevertheless retained its status as the leading solar energy producing region for several years. To date, 10% of locally produced electricity is renewable. To achieve its goal, Bordeaux and its partners are multiplying policies in favor of greener energy.

Green energies: local and eco-responsible electricity and gas production

In pursuit of its goal by 2050, the Bordeaux metropolis relies on Bordeaux Métropole Energies. The BME Group works for the decarbonization of energy by getting involved throughout the value chain. Thus, it is organized into 5 subsidiaries around the production of green energies, energy distribution, energy supply, heating networks, and building renovation.

However, Bordeaux can also count on its former municipal city gas board. For good reason, Gaz de Bordeaux has come a long way since its creation in 1875. Now, the company thinks big. It is present in 50% of French municipalities, including most cities. In Bordeaux and in 46 Gironde municipalities, it is still the only gas supplier. A well-established place, therefore, that this historical player owes in particular to the modernization of its offer. Thus, Gaz de Bordeaux also offers electricity to centralize energy contracts. In addition, the production of its gas is certified 100% green,or even from methanization in partnership with Médoc Biogaz.

The reduction of the environmental impact and the exploitation of fossil fuels is part of a general trend. This involves both historical players, such as Total Energies, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 with the development of hydrogen, biomass, wind and solar; but also new entrants such as the Enercoop initiative; or innovative companies such as Base in Pessac, specialized in thermovoltaic technology. This makes it possible both to produce electricity thanks to solar energy, as well as to recover the heat in order to power the heating.

Residential and office real estate, the largest consumers of energy

In addition to the production of renewable energies itself, working towards more economical lifestyles also involves improving the building. Nothing could be more logical given that residential accounts for nearly 36% of electricity consumption, occupying the first place. It is followed by office real estate with its 26.7%; then industry, which occupies the third place.

With the arrival of winter, the heaters are turned back on and the electricity and gas bills soar. The energy transition in the building sector therefore has ecological stakes, but also economic ones. Thus, it is estimated that heating and hot water account for more than 40% of the average monthly electricity consumption. Then come the cold and washing at 18%; multimedia at nearly 14%; electrical appliances that are 12% common; 8% hobs and ovens; lighting at 6%…

Inevitably, thinking about green energy also means studying how to reduce energy consumption. In this regard, Bordeaux relies on eco-districts in its urban development policy. BBC house, residence with RT2012 standards, even RT2020… Architects exploit both the orientation of buildings, greening, the integration of natural energies to partially supply residences …
